The NPI will be Required for all HIPAA Standard Transactions on May 23, 2008:

  1. For all primary and secondary provider fields, only the NPI will be accepted and sent on all HIPAA electronic transactions (837I, 837P, NCPDP, DDE, 276/277, 270/271 and 835), paper claims (UB-04 and CMS-1500) and SPR remittance advice.
  2. The reporting of Medicare legacy identifiers in any primary or secondary provider fields will result in the rejection of the transaction.
HIPAA version 5010 is coming:
Industry government watchers expect the Department of Health and Human Services this year (2008) to publish a proposed rule to migrate HIPAA transactions to the forthcoming version 5010.  HHS realizes it can't move forward with adoption of the ICD-10 code set without 5010, which will support the greatly expanded diagnosis and procedure codes.
